The appointment in the atelier - Pills of Good Manners

Dear bride, the wedding season has officially begun! How are your preparations going?
In organizing the wedding, one of the key moments is the first fitting of the wedding dress. It’s a moment we await with great excitement, sometimes a bit of anxiety, but above all a lot of curiosity and joy. Those are never missing!

In the latest blog article, you discovered how to choose the perfect wedding dress for your body and your wedding (if you missed it, you can read it here). But how should you show up for your appointment at the atelier?

Here are some tips that will help you face the choice of the dress with peace of mind.

• First of all, carefully choose who will accompany you and support you during the choice of your wedding dress: it would be better to show up for the appointment with no more than two people (your mother and/or at most a sister, a friend).

It’s better to avoid involving crowds of friends like in “Say Yes to the Dress”! They would only create chaos and risk confusing you, especially during the first appointments, making the atelier’s job more difficult.

You can involve everyone you want once the decision has been made, maybe by asking for a quick second appointment to preview the chosen wedding dress to those you care about most. 

• When possible, make sure that the person (or people) you have chosen to involve in the selection of your wedding dress is present at all the appointments you have scheduled; this will allow them to have a more precise overall picture, making them an even more useful and valuable “advisor.” 

• Be kind and relaxed, this will help create a joyful atmosphere in which choosing your wedding dress will become a magical and unforgettable moment. If you want to choose your wedding dress with more calm, it’s best to schedule your appointment at the atelier in the morning on a weekday; for Saturdays, it’s preferable to call at least three weeks in advance of your desired date.

We are used to thinking that for the wedding dress fitting you should go accompanied by many people, but what happens if we want to do the first fitting of the white dress alone?

No problem, in some cases, it actually turns out to be the best choice! You will be calm and won't feel pressured by the sales staff, and we all know that to make such an important decision you need your mom's approval….

Once you have identified the wedding dresses you might choose, you can book a second appointment to show them to whoever you want, but in the meantime you will have significantly narrowed down the field. 

• Don't stray from the budget: whether you like it or not, the budget is a fundamental point to focus on even before starting the search. What's the point of dreaming of a dress that is out of your reach? Setting a budget is an important way to exclude some models, focusing only on those that are truly appealing.

To conclude, here are some brief technical notes: show up to your appointment at the atelier waxed, tidy and if possible wearing a “technical” underwear set, smooth and flesh-colored with a strapless bra.

If you have a large bust and on your wedding day you want a dress with straps, you can instead bring a regular bra or bodysuit. The important thing is that your bust has the right support and position so that you can see the real fit of the wedding dresses you will try on. 

If possible don’t wear makeup or use no-transfer products to avoid staining the clothes. 

  Bring a hair tie or some bobby pins with you to tie your hair back; it will be more convenient to put on and take off the clothes you want to try. These accessories will also allow you to improvise an updo and see how it matches with the dress.

Remember, it’s very important not to wait until right before the wedding date to choose your dress, so you have time to select your gown and make any necessary alterations.
